Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes an 18-month Tottenham Hotspur contract for Antonio Conte might not be enough time for the Italian to turn things around.

Fabrizio Romano revealed last night that all the paperwork is in place for Conte to sign. Once he signs on the dotted line, which is expected to be at some point today, he will be the new manager of Tottenham until June 2023.

Conte is a real coup for Tottenham. The Italian is a proven winner and is one of the best managers in world football. If things work out for him, he will change Spurs’ fortunes, but Carragher has sent a warning to the club’s supporters.

The Liverpool legend believes that even though Conte is a top manager, it will take him twice as long as his reported contract length to get Spurs back to where they were under Mauricio Pochettino.

Carragher: Conte needs more than 18 months at Tottenham

The Englishman said on Sky Sports (November 1, 2021, 05:05 pm): “I think a manager is going to need more than 18 months to turn Tottenham around.

“Even though I am a huge admirer of Antonio Conte and how quickly he had the success with Chelsea. I think it will be very difficult to replicate that success in 18 months. I think he could need another 18 months, after that, to get Tottenham back to challenge.

“When I say challenge, I say where they were under Pochettino, where they felt that they had a chance of winning trophies and pushing people for the title. And Champions League, year in and year out.

“Do I think Conte can turn that around in 18 months? I think it will be difficult, even for a manager of his calibre.”

It really is surprising that Conte has agreed to such a short contract. A manager of his calibre wouldn’t have usually said yes to what Spurs have reportedly offered, but it looks like he has.

Turning Tottenham’s fortunes around in just 18 months would be a miracle. If Conte can achieve that, everyone will have to admit that he’s the best manager in the world, but we can’t see him delivering the goods so early.

Carragher is right, it may take 18 months more after his initial contract expires. If he’s given the time, he will most likely succeed, but considering what happened to Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo, he may not last very long.
