It’s been a long month, but the European Championships are finally over. While the tournament might not have been quite as exciting as most neutral spectators would have liked, there’s no question the games will have a serious impact on the remaining days of the summer transfer window. Certain players made quite the impression during their time on the world stage and this will most surely cause their stocks to rise as the biggest clubs look to shore up their squads.
If there’s one crop of players expected to see a major boost in their transfer values, it’s the men of the French national team. Atletico Madrid will definitely do all they can to hold onto Golden Boot winner Antoine Griezmann, though many of the world’s bigger clubs would love to snag the young French striker. Griezmann took home the Player of the Tournament award and finished with six goals and two assists, though that wasn’t enough to bring France the title. According to ESPN FC, the forward actually signed an extension with Madrid shortly before the Euros. However, after his performance there’s no telling how much money the major clubs might be willing to spend. He was recently seen speaking to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, but we suspect that his price tag might be a bit high for the notoriously stingy Wenger.
Speaking of French players being courted by the Premier League, The Independent that Manchester United is interested in a pair of French stars. The club has already made a big-money bid for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, but there are rumours they’re looking at bringing on his French teammate Blaise Matuidi as well. Both Pogba and Matuidi performed admirably well at Euro 2016 and the latter would pair well with the other star United already signed from Paris St. Germain, Zlatan Ibrahimovich.
The Euros have thrown the entire state of world football into flux with both managers and players taking turns on the roundabout. England’s disappointing performance combined with its shocking loss to Iceland in the Round of 16 meant goodbye for Roy Hodgson with little clue as to who will be taking his place. Both United States manager Jurgen Klinsmann and Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce have been suggested as potential fits for the position. Betfair may be best known for its role as a bookmaker, but it also has plenty of articles breaking down the world football markets. And after looking over the odds, the site’s staff is giving Allardyce the edge on Klinsmann to be the next England coach. It’s no secret that Klinsmann has been on the hot seat with the Americans for months and Allardyce would be hard pressed to be much more disappointing than Hodgson.
Between players and managers, it’s going to be a long month and a half of rumour and speculation before the transfer window closes 31 August. The Premier League isn’t done spending by a long shot and we expect big news to be coming down in the coming weeks as some of the biggest clubs attempt to reassert their dominance.
