Europa League clash provides perfect opportunity for Rangers to get back on track

Before the season started, if you told Steven Gerrard that Celtic would be fifth, six points off the top of the table, he would have expected his Rangers side to be sitting on a healthy early lead in the title race.

As it is, the Gers sit two points and one place behind Brendan Rodgers’ underperforming side. There is an understandable air of optimism around the club; the new signings have largely settled well and belief has returned to Ibrox.

Yet, consistency is the issue. The latest example came on Sunday, when high-flying Livingston saw off Gerrard’s side 1-0 to keep them below Celtic.

Gerrard is trying to instill a winning mentality at the club. And while that may take time, he has to immediately emphasise the importance of a swift reaction to setbacks.

The visit of Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday provides an opportunity to do exactly that.

A key part of Gerrard’s Rangers battle plan is making Ibrox a fortress again; after an impressive away draw against Villarreal in their opening match, the Gers must use home advantage to make it four points from six.

Getting back on track quickly is vital for any side with big aspirations. Thursday is the ideal chance to do that.
