Euro 2020: Roy Keane makes Bukayo Saka claim after England display
Roy Keane has told ITV (broadcast on 27/6; 19:32) that Bukayo Saka has stepped up every time he has been asked to, as he discussed whether the Arsenal star will keep his England spot for their Euro 2020 last 16 tie.
Saka was lauded by many after an outstanding performance for the Three Lions in their final group game.
The 19-year-old was the standout performer as Gareth Southgate’s men beat Czech Republic 1-0 at Wembley.
It comes after an amazing couple of years in the Arsenal side. It is easy to forget that he only made his Premier League debut for the Gunners at the start of 2019.
And he has managed to stake a real claim to hold onto his starting spot for the last 16 clash with Germany.
Unfortunately, Keane suggested that he is not yet convinced that Southgate has quite enough faith in Saka given the importance of the game. But he did insist that he was impressed with how the teenager had done.
“Yeah that’s what you get with younger players,” he told ITV when asked about the fearlessness Saka showed last week. “And of course, he’s been playing regularly for Arsenal, in a poor Arsenal team. But he’s doing well.
“And again, when you throw him in, he’s stepped up every time he’s been asked. But whether Gareth will trust him enough in a knockout game, I know he did well against the Czech Republic and it’s a group match and England are already qualified, I’m not quite sure Gareth has that trust yet in the kid.
“We’ll soon find out, but he’s done very, very well.”
Saka may be unlucky one as England prepare for Euro 2020 last 16
The problem Saka has is the amount of depth England have at their disposal.
They boast so much quality in those positions around Harry Kane.
But Saka deserves so much credit for staking his claim.
There are likely to be plenty of fans who are unhappy, whatever decision Southgate makes.
And it says a lot that Saka missing out would upset a very large portion of the fanbase after his most recent display.
