Euro 2020: Chelsea star reacts to Kalvin Phillips' England display in two words; Lucas Radebe also sends message

Lucas Radebe and Reece James were amongst a number of figures associated with either Leeds United or England who sent messages of support to Kalvin Phillips on Instagram following the Euro 2020 win over Czech Republic.

Phillips was one of the only members of Gareth Southgate’s squad to play every minute of the group-stages. He was, of course, the star of the show in the opening game.

The 25-year-old played the full 90 at Wembley on Tuesday as the Three Lions secured a 1-0 win that wrapped up top spot.

Interestingly, Phillips was given a chance to revert to a more familiar role during the second-half once Declan Rice had been taken off.

But when Jordan Henderson came on, Phillips dropped into the deeper role. And he provided a further reminder of why he is so invaluable to Marcelo Bielsa’s ranks at Elland Road.

As shown by Whoscored, only the two centre-backs and Kyle Walker completed more passes than Phillips.

Meanwhile, he also won two aerial duels. And he made two interceptions.

He has certainly staked a very strong claim to keep his place for the knockout stages.

And following the game, Phillips was lauded by many as he took to social media…

Reverting to Leeds role may be a sign of what’s ahead for Phillips as England face Euro 2020 knockout stages

The obvious downside of England’s win is that they have put themselves on what looks the much tougher side of the draw.

One of France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary await in the last 16. England would arguably only be overwhelming favourites in one of those scenarios.

So perhaps it should not be a surprise if Phillips is asked to revert to his Leeds role next week.

If he can work well with Rice in those more defensive areas, England have a fantastic chance of keeping their next opponent quiet.
