Right-Midfield: Nani (Portugal)
Valencia fans will be impressed with their club’s acquisition after a strong showing from Nani in Portugal’s win over Wales. He edges out Germany’s Joshua Kimmich to make the team after an impressive attacking display against the Welsh, constantly looking to get down the flank and testing Hennessey with a stinging shot from range.
He also showed off his goal-scoring instinct, holding his run to remain onside and sliding in to poke Cristiano Ronaldo ‘s tame effort into the net for Portugal’s second goal of the night and his third of the tournament. His contribution will be vital for Portugal if they are to undo France in Sunday’s final and claim a first major international title.
Centre-Midfield: Mesut Özil (Germany)
The Arsenal playmaker was a bright spark in the Germany side that knelt 0-2 before hosts France in Marseille. He showed his skill with a string of silky touches and exquisite dribbles to carry Germany forward but was unable to show the incisive killer instinct required to punish France, constantly being shut out by their superb defence.
Every time he got the ball however, he looked a threat and created chances and this performance shows that he really ought to take control of games more often for both club and country.
Centre-Midfield: Paul Pogba (France)
After a quiet first half when restricted to sitting deep, the mercurial Juventus midfielder justified the widespread interest in his services and showed just why he is touted as one of the world’s best with a great attacking performance, growing in stature as the game wore on in Marseille.
He capped off his performance late in the game when he pounced on Kimmich’s error at the back, showed audacious skill to get behind the young full-back with a moment of magic, before Manuel Neuer flapping at his cross allowed Antoine Griezmann to tap home France ‘s second goal of the night.
Left-Midfield: Gareth Bale (Wales)
The Real Madrid star has shone for his country throughout the tournament at was a live-wire from the first whistle once again against Portugal in Lyon. Bale kept Rui Patricio busy all night in the Portugal goal, with a string of shots that kept getting closer, one his highlights including a brilliant run beyond Danilo before shooting, then later hitting a thunderbolt from range which was beaten away by Patricio.
He was a threat to the Portuguese goal on numerous occasions but was never given the space to get near enough to a clear cut chance on goal. He was still Wales’ best player on the night and can exit with his head held high along with his teammates.
