Ethan Ampadu is good, but too green for Aston Villa promotion push

Wales were defeated by Denmark in UEFA Nations League action this week. Despite a late goal from Gareth Bale, the damage was already done and Ryan Giggs’ side lost 2-1.

It was a performance not helped by injuries to both Paul Dummett and James Chester. The latter saw the Aston Villa man coming off for an apparent Aston Villa target.

Goal reported in the week that Ampadu is available for loan in January. Aston Villa, along with Derby County, are said to be keen.

Aston Villa desperately need centre-back recruits and Ampadu fulfils that criteria.

However, based on his display against Denmark, Aston Villa might want to look elsewhere. There is no doubt that the 18-year-old is a very talented young footballer. But good enough to lead a promotion charge for Aston Villa? That did not look like the case.

For Yussuf Poulsen’s effective winner he failed to get near the RB Leipzig forward in almost lackadaisical fashion.

Ampadu is a great talent for the future but he needs time at a different level before being at the standard Aston Villa need.

Dean Smith should not allow his promotion hopes to be used as a testing ground for this teenage talent.
