Erling Haaland 'just laughed' when Martin Odegaard asked him to join Arsenal this summer
The North Londoners went into the market in search of a prolific striker. After Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departures, Mikel Arteta needed someone incredible up top.
Edu went and signed Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City, and he is proving to be a sensational addition to the squad.
However, there was a time when Arsenal fans dreamt of Haaland, who is close pals with the new Gunners skipper, Odegaard.
Erling Haaland ‘just laughed’ when Martin Odegaard asked him to join Arsenal
After months of speculation surrounding his future, Haaland joined Manchester City. He penned a £375,000-a-week deal at the Etihad back in May (Fabrizio Romano), and Odegaard has wished him well.
However, the Arsenal captain admitted that he tried to lure his countryman to the Emirates. “He’s a great guy, great player and I think unfortunately for us he will be a great signing for Manchester City,” he told talkSPORT.
“For sure, he will score some goals. I wish him all the best except for when we play them. It will be fun to see him in England.
“When all the Arsenal fans were posting pictures of him and me I would send it to him. I tried, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough… he just laughed.”
Let’s be honest, Haaland was never going to join Arsenal.
The Norwegian is one of the best strikers in the world already, and there was no way he was going to leave Borussia Dortmund to join a team that wasn’t in the Champions League.
To add to that, Arsenal wouldn’t have been able to compete with the wages that Manchester City have offered him. £375,000-a-week is more money than the Gunners have ever paid anyone in their history.
Haaland is at City now and despite whatever happened in the Community Shield against Liverpool last weekend, he is almost guaranteed to be a success at the Etihad in the coming years.
