Erik ten Hag has been asked whether he was ever close to becoming Tottenham Hotspur manager last year ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Antonio Conte’s side – in comments reported by the club’s official website.

Ten Hag is still finding his way in the Premier League. United have improved considerably since his arrival. However, they are still very much a work in progress.

Perhaps he could have moved to England much sooner had circumstances been different. Ten Hag was on Tottenham’s radar during the summer in which they appointed Nuno Espírito Santo.

The Guardian reported in 2021 that Spurs were set to hold talks with ten Hag about a switch from Ajax. Ultimately, ten Hag would stay in the Netherlands for one more year before taking the Manchester United job.

And ahead of Wednesday’s game between the two, ten Hag was asked whether he was ever close to making the move to Tottenham.

“I will never talk about interest or what else, it’s also not interesting. I’m here and I’m happy to be here and I want to get the best out of here,” he said, as reported by the club’s official website.

Spurs fans may ultimately feel that everything – eventually – worked out for the best. Obviously, Nuno’s appointment proved to be a major disappointment. And he was sacked not long into his tenure.

But that decision led to Conte coming in. And clearly, he has put Tottenham back on the right path.

Spurs are right in the mix in the very, very early stages of the Premier League title race. And it does not even appear that they have hit top gear just yet.

Ten Hag would have likely been a very smart appointment for Tottenham. You would imagine that he would be given the time Nuno did not receive.

However, Tottenham fans are pretty content with the position they now find themselves in. And a win on Wednesday would be another big statement.
