Tottenham Hotspur were dumped out of the Carabao Cup in miserable fashion on Tuesday night. League Two outfit Colchester United prevailed from a penalty shootout following a goalless 90 minutes.
Several players earned a chance to impress boss Mauricio Pochettino but missed spot-kicks from Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura saw Tottenham pay a sizeable price.
One man who did get the chance to impress was Eric Dier. Having not played a single minute of league football this season he was given the chance to play 90 minutes at centre-back.
He helped his team towards a clean sheet and in truth, the home side never looked like breaking Tottenham’s rearguard during the 90 minutes.

Despite his penalty heroics at the World Cup with England in 2018, Dier wasn’t among the first five players to take penalties at Colchester.
Dier was clearly unhappy at full-time, however. Football London claims that the £60,000-a-week (Spotrac) player uttered the words ‘that was embarrassing’ as he walked from the field.
Tottenham have won just twice this season and their form has simply not been good enough.
Losing to Colchester simply has to be the lowest ebb and the only way is up for Spurs after such a demoralising result.
TBR Verdict – Dier is right to criticise but it might stop Pochettino giving him game time
It’s hard to disagree with Dier’s assessment that the defeat to League Two opposition was embarrassing.

That said, Pochettino has been a disgruntled so-and-so during the current campaign and he is unlikely to take kindly to such a damning assessment form one of his fringe players.
Dier is likely to be back on the bench this weekend when Tottenham face Southampton at home and after this critique, it could be his base for the vast majority of the current campaign.
