Eric Dier surely moves a lot closer to England recall - TBR View

Many Tottenham Hotspur fans may have welcomed Eric Dier not receiving the England call-up his form arguably deserved off the back of a brilliant campaign for Antonio Conte’s side.

Dier looks like a man transformed since Conte came to the club. The Italian wasted little time highlighting how highly he rated the 28-year-old.

Conte claimed before the turn of the year that the £4 million star could become one of the best in the world in his position. And he has certainly lived up to expectations so far.

His performances at the heart of Tottenham’s back three made a huge difference as Spurs went on to clinch fourth spot and a return to the Champions League.

Surprisingly, his form was not enough to earn a recall to Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad in what proved to be a torrid break for the Three Lions.

Dier moves closer to England recall without doing anything

The Euro 2020 finalists failed to win a single game. And their break ended with a humbling 4-0 defeat at home to Hungary at Molineux.

England capitulated defensively. And there are now real questions regarding how they are set to perform in the World Cup. Certainly, you would like to think that there are major question marks hanging over a number of players’ places for Qatar.

And that may be particularly satisfying for Dier. Of course, he would not have wanted to see England struggle. But it does seem that his form for Tottenham may not be enough on its own to earn him a recall to the side.

Clearly, Dier did enough to get another opportunity. And Southgate is now asking for trouble if he continues to overlook the Tottenham man.

Dier has surely moved a lot closer to an England recall without playing a single minute since the final day.
