Eric Dier recent contributions for Tottenham mustn’t be understated

Tottenham Hotspur are looking very good at the moment.

The north Londoners are currently top of the Premier League, and have had some fantastic results so far in 2020/21.

There were concerns after the opening defeat to Everton, but Spurs haven’t lost a game since then, with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son shining in attack.

In recent weeks though, the Jose Mourinho of old appears to have made a comeback, with the defensive side of things significantly improving at Spurs.

The 0-0 with Chelsea on Sunday means the club have now recorded four clean sheets in the last five league outings, and one man has been a constant during this period.

Eric Dier often comes in for criticism, especially from neutral fans when he plays for England, but the star has been a rock for Tottenham over the past couple of months.

He was superb alongside Joe Rodon against Chelsea, and has quietly been going about his business at centre-half this term.

Clearly Mourinho is pleased with the 26-year-old’s contributions, as he’s been the constant in the backline, with Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld in and out.

£72,000-a-week star Dier (Spotrac) may not be the quickest, but a better sense of position has helped him out a lot this term.

It seems he is really growing into the role now, having played largely as a holding midfielder under Mauricio Pochettino.

There’s a real maturity about him these days, which may well be as a result of working under Mourinho.

Spurs are currently the best defensive team in the division having shipped nine goals in 10 games – three of which came against West Ham when Dier didn’t play – suggesting the Englishman really has become a key cog in the Mourinho machine.
