Eric Dier hails Antonio Conte after Tottenham star's England recall
Dier, of course, is likely to end his 22-month wait for another appearance for England this month. The centre-back has been recalled by Gareth Southgate after a superb run of form for Spurs.
The 28-year-old deserves enormous credit for turning his fortunes around. But there is little doubt that the appointment of Conte can be earmarked as a turning point.
The Italian was quick to claim that Dier had the potential to be one of the world’s best in his position. At the time, the suggestion would have probably been met with a lot of ridicule.
‘He has done a lot for me’
But no-one is laughing now. Dier himself admits that he could improve further. But there is no doubt that he is one of the first names on the Tottenham team sheet.
And ahead of his return to the international arena, Dier hailed the impact Conte has had on his form.
“I don’t want to sound like a teacher’s pet but he has done a lot for me,” he told The Times. “He has had a great effect on me, tactically, physically, mentally. Not just the manager but all his staff. He is very demanding but I really enjoy that. Ever since he arrived, I have never learnt so much as in this year.”
Dier hails Antonio Conte
There was always an expectation that some players would experience a real resurgence under Conte. And there would have been plenty of excitement amongst Tottenham fans about which members of the squad would be transformed.
Some may have expected the likes of Emerson Royal or Ryan Sessegnon due to the importance of wing-backs to his preferred system. And in fairness, Sessegnon has stepped up.
Somehow, Harry Kane has kicked on further. And players such as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min have been amazing under Conte.
But Dier is another underrated success story.
Many will argue that he should now not only be one of the first names on the Tottenham team sheet, but also one of the first for England also.
