Eric Dier has heaped praise on the depth which is now on offer at Tottenham Hotspur, suggesting it is stronger now than it was when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge (Sky Sports).

Jose Mourinho has seemingly found a winning formula at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Spurs sat at the top of the Premier League.

England international Dier has been a mainstay in Mourinho’s team this season, holding down a place at centre-back under the Portuguese boss.

The 26-year-old earns £85,000-a-week at Tottenham and his form has gone on an upward trajectory since the arrival of Mourinho.

Dier featured a lot under Pochettino too, playing in defence and as a defensive midfielder.

He feels Spurs have clearly improved and has been raving about the competition for places in the current squad.

He told Sky Sports: “The depth of the squad is not something I’ve seen during my time here, we’ve got an incredible depth. The amount of quality we have coming off the bench, and not even in the squad, is incredible.

“That competition is definitely driving things, and I think that’s something in the past we struggled with, not having the competition to drive things.

“You want to have your own self-motivation but you can’t deny it’s different when it’s a big squad and everyone is driving each other.”

TBR View – Squad depth could see Tottenham home in quest for glory

It’s fair to say that Tottenham did some stunning business during the summer transfer window.

Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon checked in from Real Madrid, Carlos Vinicius signed from Benfica, whilst Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has looked the part since joining from Southampton.

Last season when Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were injured, Spurs were firmly in trouble with a lack of options in reserve.

Of course, if those players were to get injured again they’d still be big losses – although the impact might now be less severe.

With Mourinho overseeing things, there is real optimism that Spurs can finally lift some silverware.

Tottenham’s strength in depth might give them the edge over their rivals as the season progresses.
