Eric Dier has been quoted by O Jogo as saying that he regards Tottenham Hotspur-linked Bruno Fernandes is one of the best players in Portuguese football.
The 24-year-old has been linked heavily with a move to Tottenham in recent weeks. O Jogo have also reported that Tottenham are leading the race to sign the Portugal international, after having a £62.5million bid accepted.
Tottenham are likely to be after a new attacking midfielder this summer, with Christian Eriksen telling Danish media at the start of the recent international fixtures that he wants to “try something new”.
Speaking to Portuguese media, Dier – who spent 11 years at Sporting after signing for the club in 2003 as a nine-year-old before joining Spurs in 2014 – was full of praise for Fernandes but chose not to comment on the rumours.
“I’m trying to follow the Portuguese league, but it’s not always easy,” Dier said. “But I know perfectly well that he is one of the best players in Portuguese football. I will not comment.”
Fernandes would be a monumental signing for Tottenham. For Sporting last season, Fernandes has scored a whopping 32 goals from midfield – as well as laying on 18 assists.
At £62.5million, he is certainly expensive and would easily be the north Londoners’ new club-record signing – Davinson Sanchez holds that record, following his £42million move from Ajax.
But he is worth every penny, which Dier seemingly agrees with.
