£92,000-a-week Tottenham star back with Tottenham first-team, it's a major boost for Conte
Eric Dier is back in Tottenham training after returning from the World Cup where he was representing England.
The 28-year-old didn’t start any of the five games that England played at the tournament, playing just 33 minutes.
Dier was actually an intriguing call-up to the squad. He made some high-profile errors ahead of the tournament and his selection came as a shock.
Still, it probably highlights how short England are of quality centre-backs. After Harry Maguire and John Stones, it’s really tough to see another top performer.
The 28-year-old has collected 49 caps for England. As a result, perhaps Gareth Southgate chose him given his experience on the international stage before.
Dier has played in every game for Tottenham during their Premier League campaign of 2022/23.
He’s started 14 times and it would appear that Antonio Conte has valued his contribution to the Tottenham cause.
It’s fair to say he can do better though. After failing to play for England a great deal in Qatar, he should at least return to Tottenham fit and ready to go.
Dier back with Tottenham squad
Considering he’s played regularly for Tottenham this season, this is great news for Antonio Conte ahead of a return to action.
Spurs face Brentford on Boxing Day in a London derby and the Italian boss would love to be able to call upon Dier.
The Tottenham rearguard is kind of integral to their fortunes and it takes a certain sort of player to be able to operate under Conte.
Dier is still getting to grips with what his manager wants from him and he’s sometimes been found out when it comes to playing out from the back.
The £92,000-a-week star will hope to eradicate the silly mistakes from his game once Premier League football gets back underway.
If he can do that, Tottenham should be on course to finish in the top four once again.
