Enner Valencia joins Everton on loan from West Ham United - Twitter Reacts

Everton have signed Enner Valencia on a season long loan from West Ham United. The deal comes with an option to buy for £14.5 million next summer and the Ecuadorian will provide good competition for the forward positions. The club may be disappointed by their failure to complete a move for Moussa Sissoko, but this will soften the blow. He has showed flashes of his quality at West Ham and could be a shrewd pick up for Everton.

Valencia has started all three of West Ham’s Premier League matches this season, which shows that he was well thought of at the club. The signings made over the summer always made it look like they needed to offload a forward, especially after the club were knocked out of the Europa League. Slaven Bilic built his squad with the Europa League in mind, that is no longer relevant and Valencia was made available as a result.

He is a versatile attacker, capable of playing as a regular striker or on the flanks. Valencia has been brought to provide cover, as they had to start the season without a main striker. Romelu Lukaku is currently suffering from a poor run of form and Everton needed to bring in another player capable of scoring goals. Valencia has showed that he can be dangerous in phases for West Ham, but he needs to add consistency to his game.

There were too many matches in which Valencia didn’t have an influence on proceedings. He was frustrating for West Ham fans as his talent was obvious, but he couldn’t deliver on a weekly basis. In the Premier League, he has only scored ten times in 52 appearances, which isn’t a great record for a striker. His creativity isn’t much better with just five assists across that period. Everton fans will believe they should be signing a better forward than Valencia.

However, his record at international level is much better, scoring 16 times in 29 caps for Ecuador. He was a standout performer at the 2014 World Cup, which earned him the move to West Ham. If he is given a settled role in the side, he could surprise people and start showing his international form domestically.

The lack of options at the end of the window have contributed to this deal and Everton would have been unlikely to sign Valencia if they had more time. However, there is little risk in a loan deal and it gives the club an opportunity to try the player before paying a big fee. The impetus is on Valencia to perform and try to earn a permanent contract. Everton could benefit if Valencia is fully motivated.

Here is how Twitter reacted to the loan move:
