Newcastle United’s Under-23 side came from three goals down to win 4-3 over Leeds United’s reserve team in Premier League 2 on Friday at the Toon’s training ground – and a non-league English side have confirmed the identity of a Toon trialist.
The Toon fielded senior players Henri Saivet and Paul Dummett, while Elliot Anderson – who signed a new deal this week – also started. Leeds went 3-0 up, only for Newcastle to roar back in the second half and secure a point.
The Whites dominated the first 45, as Scottish Under-19 international McCarron providing the difference as he netted a well-taken brace – while highly-rated summer signing Joe Gelhardt also scoring a penalty.
But Newcastle came roaring back. Yannick Toure scored a header , before a mistake from Leeds goalkeeper Elia Caprile allowed Elliot Anderson to score a penalty. A Nohan Kenneh own goal saw parity restored, before sub Stan Flaherty scored a winner.
But it was Newcastle who fielded a trialist in their side, along with summer additions Bradley Cross and Rodrigo Vilca. The Toon posted their line-up on Twitter before the match, with the trialist seemingly playing up front or on the wing.
But after the initial post, Northern League Division One side Hebburn Town – who play in the ninth tier of English football – confirmed that the identity of the trialist is Cedwyn Scott.
Scott, 21, has played at senior level for Scottish clubs Dundee, Berwick Rangers and Forfar. But he has since been playing for Hebburn – but is looking to try and win a contract at Newcastle, and Hebburn confirmed he was the trialist.
