England vs Scotland: Rangers starlet could be Steve Clarke's Wembley wildcard
After much excitement and anticipation, Scotland head into Friday’s clash vs England off the back of a defeat in their Euro 2020 opener.
Steve Clarke’s men were beaten by Czech Republic at Hampden Park. Two outstanding finishes from Patrik Schick decided the game.
There is still plenty to play for for Scotland. The opportunity for third-placed sides to get through means that victory in one of their final two games could well see Clarke’s men through.
But changes may well be made for the trip to Wembley later this week.
Kieran Tierney, if fit, should return. Che Adams meanwhile, staked a claim for a start with a bright second-half display.
But perhaps the big gamble Clarke should take comes on the right of the defence.
Stephen O’Donnell may be lucky to start against the Three Lions. The Motherwell man had a poor afternoon against Czech Republic.
He made a number of mistakes in possession. And he did not close Vladimir Coufal down soon enough for the cross that led to the opening goal.
His game was summed up by a moment in the first-half when he managed to clatter into Ryan Christie when the visitors were seemingly unable to halt the Celtic man’s burst into the box.
James Forrest replaced O’Donnell in the second-half. And he produced some bright moments, with one particularly impressive run into the penalty area.
Forrest is certainly a contender to start. But perhaps Clarke should take a big gamble and hand Rangers starlet Nathan Patterson a chance at Wembley.
England vs Scotland: Rangers starlet could be wildcard after getting Euro 2020 nod
If Clarke is prepared to pick Patterson for Euro 2020, he is obviously willing to put his faith in him if the situation requires it.
Arguably, the opportunity is now there. The Rangers youngster could be Scotland’s wildcard against Gareth Southgate’s side.
He has impressed whenever he has featured for Steven Gerrard’s men at Ibrox.
Patterson would offer more defensively than Forrest. But he would also need little encouragement to get forward.
It is a huge ask and major roll of the dice if Clarke turns to Patterson. But with O’Donnell struggling on Monday, a change is needed.
Perhaps, the stage should be perfectly set for the Rangers starlet.
And just maybe, he could go on and steal the show.
