England must convince Ademola Lookman to pledge his allegiance or risk another Wilfried Zaha situation.
As reported by the Mirror, the Everton forward is wanted by Nigeria.
But Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has insisted they are doing all they can to ensure he chooses them over the African nation.
Lookman qualifies for Nigeria through his parents.
Currently he is a regular England U21 international and so there is hope that he will feel compelled to fully commit his future.
The second Lookman steps out for a nation in a competitive match is the point where he cannot go back, which is why he could yet represent the Super Eagles.
Shades of Zaha
With this situation, one cannot help but recall the very similar situation to that of Wilfried Zaha.
England appear to be regretting their decision not to select him for competitive games when he was younger.
Zaha chose to represent the Ivory Coast in 2016 – since then, he has gone on to become one of the most feared forwards in the Premier League.
It was a big shame, as one would feel there is a greater chance to succeed on the world stage with England than with the Ivory Coast.
Zaha clearly felt disappointed that his club form at that point was not enough to convince Roy Hodgson to pick him for the last European Championships.
Frankly, the same mistakes cannot be made regarding Lookman.
Lookman is the real deal
Southgate can’t let this one slip through his fingers.
There’s a real chance that in a few years time, Lookman could become like Zaha.
He is impressively direct and shares similar traits with the Crystal Palace man.
So far in his fledgeling career he has shown glimpses of his raw talent, and could have a huge role to play for England later down the line, with some other great players in his age bracket.
