Alan Shearer picked out two Southampton stars for special praise, naming the duo in his Premier League Team of the Week on Tuesday.
Southampton put in a brilliant performance on Sunday as they comfortably beat league-leaders Everton 2-0. James Ward-Prowse got them going with a great finish on 27 minutes.
Che Adams then doubled the lead eight minutes later, somehow squeezing a shot past several players on the line. The star of the show was Danny Ings, however.
Southampton’s star striker didn’t get one himself but assisted both goals. His through ball allowed Ward-Prowse the space for the opener, while his work and cross from the left gave Adams his chance.
As a result, former Southampton striker Alan Shearer named both Ings and Ward-Prowse in his Premier League Team of the Week.
“[Ward-Prowse] ran the midfield against the leaders and scored the opening goal with a well-timed run and emphatic finish,” he wrote of the 25-year-old.
“With two assists, [Ings] showed he has more than just goals to his game,” he said of the England man. “He is such a well-rounded striker.”
Southampton picked up arguably the result of the weekend and fully deserved multiple entrants in the Team of the Week. Ings, in particular, shone.
The striker is undoubtedly one of the best in the league right now and if he’s creating as well as scoring? Southampton can rest easy going forwards this season – assuming he steers clear of any injuries.
The Saints are now 7th in the table, just three points off top. The next few weeks will be very interesting, then, as they figure out exactly what their aims should be this season.
