Emotional return for Milner would be Leeds’ dream signing if they get promoted

It is approaching the stage of the season at which clubs across the country start to plan for the forthcoming transfer window.

But it’s more difficult for those teams who do not know which division they’ll be playing in next season and the disparity between the Championship and the Premier League is so big in terms of finances that promotion chasers like Leeds United likely have two lists of targets.

That’s one in case they finally return to the promised land of the top flight and another in case a further season of toil in the second tier lies in wait.

But if Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds fans allowed themselves to dream about a potential new arrival if they did get promoted, who would they go for?

James Milner of Liverpool would be the obvious choice. The tireless midfielder has enjoyed something of a resurgence since retiring from international duty and is currently in the heat of a title chase against his former club Manchester City.

But if Leeds got up and could offer him an emotional return to Elland Road, Milner could well be tempted in a way that nearly no other title-chaser in England could be tempted by a newly-promoted side.

The fans would get an unbelievable lift and Milner’s energy, eye for goal and experience would be a huge boost to Bielsa’s side.
