Emmanuel Frimpong has responded on Twitter after Granit Xhaka was sent off during Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Burnley at The Emirates on Sunday evening – by urging his old side to sell him, and has joked about a replacement.
Xhaka, 28, was shown a straight red card just a handful of matches following Nicolas Pepe’s headbutt against Leeds – for raising his hands. Replays showed the Swiss midfielder for throttling Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood.
Things went from bad to worse for Arsenal. They suffered their fourth straight Premier League defeat at the Emirates – and third in a row – as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game, at the wrong end.
Ex-Arsenal midfielder Frimpong reacted on Twitter to Xhaka’s red card, and hammered the former Gladbach player – urging his old club to sell the £100,000-a-week (Spotrac) man. He joked that he should replace him.
TBR’s view – Should Arsenal consider Xhaka sale?
While Frimpong is clearly joking that he should replace Xhaka, his initial claim that Arsenal should sell the midfielder is something the Gunners seriously need to consider. Even before Sunday’s incident.
His form this season has been poor. Mo Elneny and Thomas Partey have come in and outperformed him, while both Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock are knocking on the door. Many have questioned their absence.
Eurosport state that Arsenal will listen to offers for Xhaka, and they certainly should after his red card.
