Luke Ayling has been crowned the PFA Player of the Year as voted for by supporters, beating a string of other Championship players to the title – and both Emmanuel Frimpong and Sanchez Watt have responded.

Ayling, 28, was a mainstay of Leeds United’s starting XI last season – clocking up 38 appearances in all competitions and helping the Whites keep a whopping 18 clean sheets. He even had a hand in nine goals.

Scoring four times, Ayling even netted a stunning mid-air volley against Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town just before football was suspended. He has made the right-back slot his own.

It saw him nominated alongside the likes of QPR’s Eberechi Eze, Brentford’s Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma, West Brom’s Matheus Pereira and Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic – but fans have voted for Ayling to win the title.

It comes as somewhat of a surprise that only one Leeds player was up for the award given they cruised to the Premier League as champions – with Pablo Hernandez, Kalvin Phillips and Ben White overlooked for the award.

Nevertheless, Emmanuel Frimpong and Sanchez Watt responded. Both teammates at Arsenal’s youth academy of Ayling, Frimpong claims the Gunners used to tease Ayling over his lack of speed.

Watt, meanwhile, compared Ayling’s growth to that of another ex-Arsenal star in Serge Gnabry – who scored a brace in Wednesday night’s Champions League semi-final win over Lyon for Bayern Munich.
