Emiliano Martinez has joked that Bukayo Saka has so much talent and versatility that he is worried that he could soon be challenging him for the goalkeeper spot in Arsenal’s side, and insisted to talkSPORT that the youngster is already ready for an England chance.
Saka has been a revelation this season. He has provided 12 assists in all competitions, with his latest coming in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City at the Emirates.
What has been so impressive about Saka’s form is the fact that he has been tasked with playing in so many different positions already.
In the last two games, the 18-year-old has been deployed on the right of the front three. But he has taken practically no time to adapt.
And Martinez – who has also been extremely impressive since coming into the team – backed the teenager to be on Gareth Southgate’s radar before admitting that he has one concern.
“Saka can be in the England team already, he’s the kind of player you need in your team,” he told talkSPORT.
“It’s not just about how much he gives you [on the pitch], he’s very positive and even with the top, experienced players that have been around, there are not many players like him.
“He’s a team player. I could give him my gloves and he would perform in goal, that’s Saka. I’m a bit worried, actually!”
TBR View: Saka contract one of Arsenal’s most important deals this summer
Given Saka’s form, it appears to be fair to say that Arsenal may have already completed one of their most important pieces of business for the summer.
As reported by BBC Sport, Saka has recently signed a new long-term deal with the Gunners.
Of course, he needs to be given breathing space to make mistakes as he continues to improve. But there is surely no question that Saka has, so far, exceeded all expectations with his performances this season.
