Arsenal backup goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has given his thoughts on his chances of usurping Bernd Leno and becoming first choice.
As per Arsenal en America, via Football.London, Martinez has stated his belief in his own ability and hopes to use his cup matches to impress Unai Emery.
He said: “Leno starts number one and I’m playing [in the cups], although everything can change, because they left me at the club knowing that I can be number one. Our coach told us that we are among the best goalkeepers who play with our feet, which is something very important for his system.
“In qualities I am equal to or better than him. After nine years without much rhythm I wanted to leave but I got the news I was going to play more games and I decided to stay to try to be number one. If I didn’t believe myself of being capable of taking that position, I would not have stayed.”
TBR’s View – It would be a shock of Martinez replaced Leno even accounting for Tottenham error
Healthy competition for places is important for goalkeepers and £100,000-a-week (Spotrac) Leno needs to know that his spot isn’t totally secure.
But the German must also remain fairly confident of keeping his place in the Premier League side even taking into account his mistake against Tottenham last time out.
Martinez has not got the same pedigree as Leno, and Emery was in charge when Leno signed for the club as well. Martinez needs to keep his confidence up, but it would be surprising if he got the gametime he was looking for.
