Lucas Torreira has suffered a fractured ankle after being stretchered off the Fratton Park pitch during Arsenal’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Portsmouth earlier this week – and Emi Martinez has commented on a video Torreira uploaded on Wednesday.

Torreira, 24, was replaced by Dani Ceballos in the first half of the win over Pompey, and it has now been confirmed that he has suffered a fractured ankle. No timescale has been put on the injury, but he certainly faces a fight to return this season.

The Gunners have little options in the middle of the park and with Torreira sidelined for a considerable amount of time, Mikel Arteta will be concerned. He has just Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi and Dani Ceballos to fill two holes.

Torreira posted a video on Instagram before confirmation of his fractured ankle, which shows the former Sampdoria midfielder continually working in the gym despite the injury, captioning the post: “Working and thinking about the future”.

Torreira has clocked up 83 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions since joining the north London club in the summer of 2018 for a fee of £26million (Goal), after starring for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup.

Responding to Torreira’s Instagram post, goalkeeper Martinez told the midfielder that he will come back stronger: “You are a professional and you will return better than you were.”
