Emi Martinez comments on Arsenal future, and how it hinges on Sergio Aguero

Arsenal goalkeeper Emi Martinez has been quoted by Argentine outlet TNT Sports that he is open to leaving The Gunners this summer, and that he could rejoin Independiente – but such a move depends on Manchester City star Sergio Aguero.

Martinez, 27, has enjoyed his most fruitful season in terms of appearances since joining Arsenal in 2012. The uncapped Argentine has clocked up 11 first-team outings this season, taking his total to just 25 in eight years.

Arsenal’s second-choice goalkeeper, Martinez still has two years remaining on his contract at Arsenal – and with the Gunners in with a chance of Europa League qualification for next season, the Argentine may be given more game time.

But asked about his future, Martinez stated that he is “open to everything” with the stopper perhaps looking to finally be considered first choice somewhere. He also responded over a return to Independiente, and said he will when Aguero goes back.

“We will see. When Agüero returns, I would think about it. It is the club he [Aguero] loves. The truth is that this can never be ruled out, I am open to everything, especially in England,” Martinez said.

“Until 17 or 18 I played in Argentina, some forget. I will never say no to the chance of returning, perhaps two or three years from now I want to return.”

TBR’s view – Arsenal need to keep Martinez for as long as possible

But when he wants to leave, he deserves the Gunners’ blessing. Martinez has remained loyal to the north London side for many years as third-choice goalkeeper and his promotion to back-up stopper is just what he deserves.

As second-choice goalkeepers go, he is a top-quality option. So, Arsenal need to keep him onside for as long as possible, but with the player saying himself that in two years’ time he could consider an exit, The Gunners should give him their blessing.
