Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour feels that Mesut Ozil could put Unai Emery’s job security at risk, according to Metro.
Parlour has made the link between the struggles Emery had with Paris Saint-Germain talisman Neymar and Ozil’s current predicament.
He said: “It’s been a little bit like PSG with Neymar. Neymar ended up getting Emery the sack. He lost the dressing room and Neymar was pulling the strings there. Maybe it could be the same at Arsenal.
“He could stick his heels in and sit out his contract, and say “play me when you want”. The players hold all the power.”
But despite Parlour’s comparison, the situation between Ozil and Emery seems different to the issues with Neymar.
As the world’s most expensive player, Neymar was always going to have the upper hand on any manager at PSG. On the other hand, Ozil was signed by Arsene Wenger and Emery can legitimately claim he is not a good fit for his style of football.
Emery’s stock among the fans is higher than Ozil’s is right now and as the new man in charge, he has to be given the freedom and opportunity to reshape his Gunners side as he sees fit.
Ozil must also ask himself where he might realistically go from Arsenal. He’s an ageing player now, on huge money and that limits his options unless he wants to go to China.
Emery’s experience with Neymar will also help him deal with Ozil, but the biggest factor will be that he now holds the upper hand.
