Ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Newcastle United on Sunday, manager Unai Emery has faced the press.
The Gunners will be keen to get their campaign off to a winning start at St James’ Park. Three points would certainly maintain the optimism that currently surrounds the club following their exciting summer dealings.
The north London club made several exciting signings prior to the English transfer window closing on Thursday. However, the European market remains open. This means there may still be some outgoings from the Emirates Stadium.
Emery has hinted that Shkodran Mustafi could be set for an exit. As quoted by Football.London, the Spanish coach said, “I spoke with him when we finished last season, I spoke with him when we started pre-season and I spoke with him also two weeks ago saying maybe there was the possibility he can leave”.
Arsenal would certainly be wise to shift the German centre-back off their books. The 27-year-old arrived from Valencia for a £35 million fee in 2016. Since then, he has failed to get to grips with the Premier League and his form has deteriorated drastically. He endured a torrid campaign last time out, regularly making errors and suffering costly lapses in concentration. These incidents have caused him to become an unpopular figure amongst the Emirates Stadium faithful.
A fresh start somewhere else would be the best thing for Mustafi. Getting rid of the 20-cap German international would certainly be the best thing for Arsenal. Emery will be hoping that the struggling defender can be moved on this month.
