Sunderland are in action in the EFL Trophy tonight with a visit to League Two side Morecambe.

But fans will also eagerly be keeping their eyes on another EFL Trophy clash.

Grimsby Town host Newcastle United’s under-21 side and Sunderland fans have more than one reason to hold a vested interest in this encounter.

Not only will they be willing their rivals Newcastle to lose to Grimsby, but they will be hoping that one of their own can contribute towards the Magpies’ downfall.

Sunderland starlet Elliot Embleton is currently on loan at Grimsby and he is impressing.

The 19-year-old has scored twice from central midfield in 10 games for the Mariners, including a stunning strike against MK Dons in the FA Cup last weekend.

Embleton is widely considered to be one of Sunderland’s best young prospects. And his performances on loan at Grimsby are justifying the hype surrounding him.

Now the England under-20 international has the chance to endear himself to Sunderland fans with his display against Newcastle under-21s.

Embleton will be eager to impress in a crunch match for him on a personal level, should he be available and not yet on international duty.

If the talented teenager can get his name on the score-sheet tomorrow, Sunderland fans will already be taking a liking to the academy product, who has a big future ahead of him at The Stadium of Light.
