With Sunderland relegated to League One, it was anticipated that many of their young talents would continue getting a first-team chance. That has certainly been the case with the likes of Josh Maja, Denver Hume and Bali Mumba.

Elliot Embleton might have been top of many fan lists regarding the youngster at Sunderland ready for an opportunity.

The England youth international had a great summer with his nation and looks a talented midfielder capable of playing at this level.

However, Sunderland decided it best he head out on loan. The 19-year-old joined Grimsby Town on loan at the start of the season.

“We’ll sit with him and agree what’s best. I wouldn’t bring him back if he’s not going to get game-time here, because that’s to the detriment of him in general.

“And also, selfishly for me, I want an Elliot Embleton in my squad who has maybe played 40 first team games, because then he’s better equipped to deal with it.”

It has been a predictably tough season for the player. Grimsby were expected to struggle in League Two, and have done, currently sitting 18th in the table.

But last night they picked up one of their best wins of the season, with Embleton at the heart of things.

He put in a great 90-minute display as Grimsby beat promotion hopefuls Tranmere 5-2 at Blundell Park. Embleton even topped off the game with his second goal for the club. He marauded into the attacking half, taking a brilliant first-touch on his left foot, before sweeping home the final goal of the night.

Sunderland fans have high hopes for Embleton’s future. His current loan deal expires in January but Jack Ross has explained his wish to keep him out for the time being.

But the time he returns, Sunderland would hope to be a Championship side again. Embleton might be a part of that future.
