Sunderland and Newcastle are preparing for a major game tonight in the EFL Trophy.

Newcastle’s under-21 side will take the short trip to Sunderland, where they will compete for a spot in the Fourth Round of the EFL Trophy.

For most of Newcastle’s young players, this will be the biggest game of their careers in front of a packed Stadium of Light crowd.

And one youngster will be particularly keen not to let the occasion get to him as he tries to catch Rafa Benitez’s eye.

Elias Sorensen is on the verge of the first-team but needs to keep scoring to impress his manager.

With Newcastle’s strikers struggling in front of goal, many fans have been calling for Sorensen to win a promotion.

But so far, Benitez has resisted the temptation to give Sorensen a senior call-up.

Newcastle fans thought that Benitez might try Sorensen out last Saturday in the FA Cup clash with Blackburn Rovers.

However, Benitez decided to use Joselu up front instead and the Spaniard’s dismal form in front of goal continued.

The 28-year-old missed two glorious chances and has not scored since August.

If Sorensen can score against Sunderland and help dump Newcastle’s bitter rivals out of the EFL Trophy, then surely he will jump ahead of misfiring Joselu for the FA Cup replay.
