Newcastle United winger Victor Fernandez raised his game against Sunderland U23s in the 2-0 win.
The young Magpies gained the North East bragging rights after brushing aside Sunderland’s challenge. Goals from Luke Charman and Fernandez earned Newcastle a 2-0 win while Sunderland finished the match with 10 men.
Fernandez got into the thick of the action straight away. The 21-year-old was fouled in the penalty box just six minutes into the game and one minute later, Charman stepped up to score the spot-kick.
Brandon Taylor was sent off for Sunderland on 24 minutes but Newcastle didn’t extend their lead until the 72nd minute. With less than 20 minutes remaining, Fernandez converted a cross and doubled Newcastle’s lead.
The Spaniard was praised on Twitter for his performance against bitter rivals Sunderland. He is still yet to make his Newcastle debut since joining in 2017 but this latest performance has not damaged his hopes.
Players and fans praise Fernandez

Newcastle striker Elias Sorensen – who is currently on loan at Carlisle United – also sent Fernandez a social media message. The Danish striker is prolific at youth level and he enjoyed watching Fernandez stun Sunderland.
Here are some tweets from Newcastle supporters who, like Sorensen, loved Fernandez’s role in the win over Sunderland U23s.
