Liverpool showed interest in Brazilian starlet Rodrygo Goes before he signed for Real Madrid.
That’s the claim made by former Manchester City star Elano, who suggests the Reds actually made an offer for the teenager, which was deemed too low.
After an agreement of €45 million/£39 million was reached between Real and Santos in the summer of 2018 (Goal), Rodrygo signed for los Blancos ahead of the 2019/20 season.
The forward has scored five first-team goals so far and one for the club’s B team.
Three of those came in Real’s 6-0 thrashing of Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday, which has really thrust him into the spotlight.
Real seemingly have a gem on their hands, but Elano reckons they had some competition to get him.
He told ESPN: “‘There was very strong interest from Liverpool for the boy when he was in the lower categories [at Santos] and they wanted to sign him, but the offer was too low.
“Then came the offer from Madrid. I had a talk with the club and told them it was worth betting on the boy and that I would like to work with him.”
Elano has a big association with Santos having had three stints there as a player, and he was their interim manager at the time of Liverpool’s supposed interest in Rodrygo.
TBR’s view – Liverpool’s loss?
Rodrygo has the potential to become a very special player at the Bernabeu.
He could well become a big regret for Liverpool in the future, although the Reds do boast a plethora of talented youngsters in their academy at the moment.
The lure of Real Madrid will always be huge for young players, and perhaps ultimately there was little the Reds could do to sign the young talent.
