EFL Championship: Analysing the hunt for promotion
With the New Year around the corner, The English Football League Championship hasn’t disappointed thus far.
The half way point of the season was reached on Boxing Day, with the promotion race heating up with every 90 minutes of football.
The Christmas top six after the weekend’s fixtures featured Brighton and Newcastle as the top two, which many would’ve predicted prior to the start of the season.
It is still very early to call what the outcome will be come May, but Hughton’s and Benitez’s men have not shown any sign, nor intention of letting their automatic spots up for grabs.
The Seagulls go into the New Years Eve fixture eight points clear of third, and Newcastle six points clear after their 0-1 defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
The play-off spots are occupied by Reading, Huddersfield, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, just three points separating third and sixth. In pursuit of the pack, ready to pounce when the chance arises, are Derby and Fulham.
