Duncan Castles has told the Transfer Window Podcast that Arsenal’s third bid for Ben White is worth £54 million.

Arsenal chief Edu apparently submitted another offer for White this week, which is now just £2 million away from Brighton’s initial asking price for the central defender, in terms of an up-front payment.

The transfer could become one of the most expensive in Arsenal history.

But it is apparently being driven by Mikel Arteta, as he feels that White could well be a future Arsenal captain.

“My understanding is that Arsenal have now made a third offer for White. That offer came at the beginning of this week,” Castles said.

“They have increased the guaranteed sum to £48 million, so just £2 million short of the figure that was expected to be the amount that would trigger a transfer and Brighton would accept that they would allow White to leave for.

“There’s another £6 million in performance related variables and the majority of those should be easily achieved as the majority of them are based on Arsenal appearances and if you’re signing a player at that price, with the buy in from the manager – in fact Arteta is very much driving this month.

“Arteta sees White as a future captain of the club and a player central to the rebuild that he’s trying to achieve here.

“They have pretty much got to what White expected to be allowed to be sold for.”

Captain fantastic?

The news that Arteta already sees White as captain potential is very interesting.

The England international has only a year’s Premier League experience under his belt, but Arsenal obviously feel he has a huge amount of potential to be submitting such a significant offer to sign him.

White does indeed have an enviable skill set, with his ability on the ball combined with his defensive quality making him stand out as one of England’s brightest, young defensive talents.

But the pressure will be on him to step up and prove his class immediately at Arsenal, given the size of the transfer fee that Arteta’s side are apparently willing to pay.
