'Edu is working on it': Romano says Arsenal chief is lining up swoop for player who'd be 'perfect' for Gunners

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Arsenal’s pursuit of Gabriel Jesus.

The transfer guru was talking on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE, on their weekly Gazzetta dello FIVE transfer show.

To say Arsenal need to bolster their attacking ranks this summer would be a huge understatement.

The Gunners have just two senior centre-forwards playing for them right now.

Also, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both out of contract in the summer.

But over the last few days, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding Arsenal and Gabriel Jesus.

Recent reports claimed that the Gunners had reached advanced talks with the Manchester City star.

David Ornstein recently told The Athletic Football Podcast that Arsenal have all-but agreed personal terms with Jesus.

He also notes the Gunners are favourites to secure his signature, though it’s not quite at the club discussion stage.

“They are well positioned”

Now, Romano has elaborated on the state of play between Arsenal, City and Jesus.

The Italian reckons the Brazil international would be “perfect for Arsenal” and says Edu has been working on a transfer.

However, it hasn’t progressed to a bid just yet, and the race remains open, added Romano.

“First of all, I like this player and actually he would be perfect for Arsenal,” said Romano

“So he would be the perfect signing for Arsenal.

“It’s important to say what the situation is.

“Direct conversation between Edu and Gabriel Jesus’ agent (have been) taking place since long time.

“They are interested, they are in contact with the agent, they are well positioned to sign him in the summer.

“He’s out of contract in 2023 and, from what I’m told, there is no conversation at the moment with Manchester City to extend the contract, even if he’s doing very well.

“They’re focusing on Erling Haaland.

“So what’s the point now, a really really important one… the conversation between Arsenal and Manchester City will not start now. It’ll be at the end of the season.

“But it’s not only Arsenal, it’s an open race… Gabriel Jesus could be a perfect opportunity for many clubs.

“Edu is working on it but there is still no bid on the table… not yet anything advanced.”
