If reports are true, Edu’s already got the ball rolling for an Arsenal transfer masterstroke – TBR View

Arsenal are likely to prioritise the signing of at least one new striker in the summer transfer window.

At present, Mikel Arteta has just two senior centre-forwards in his Gunners ranks.

In addition, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are out of contract at the end of the season.

Therefore, it’s crucial for Arteta to bring in reinforcements up front when the campaign ends.

A number of top strikers have been linked with Arsenal in recent months.

Now, a report has emerged claiming the Gunners have already begun talks with one such player.

According to The Express, Arsenal have made the first move to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez this summer.

Edu Gaspar has apparently held talks with Nunez’s agents about a potential move to the Emirates.

If the report is true, then Arsenal fans should be buzzing, as Nunez is a player of the highest calibre.

“World-class”

Nunez became Benfica’s club-record signing in 2020 when they spent £20.5m to land his signature.

The 22-year-old had previously shone at Almeria, scoring 16 goals and claiming two assists from 30 Spanish second-tier games.

And prior to that, Nunez came through the ranks at Penarol, where he won the Uruguayan league title in 2018.

This season, he is in top form, with a staggering 26 goals and two assists from 33 games.

A 6ft 2in powerhouse with a powerful right foot, “menacingly incalculable” movement and killer instincts on the pitch, he’s a star in the making.

Former Benfica boss Jorge Jesus even described him as a “world-class” striker in the making.

Edu could well be getting the ball rolling for a transfer masterstroke – let’s hope Arsenal get the deal over the line.
