Arsenal fans may have been somewhat surprised by reports from the Daily Mirror over the weekend which claimed that the Gunners are looking at Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard this summer.
Edouard looks to be a fantastic talent. He has scored 28 goals in all competitions this season. So Arsenal’s reported interest is not difficult to understand.
However, what is intriguing is the Mirror has claimed that Mikel Arteta wants Edouard regardless of what happens to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer.
That means that Arsenal could perhaps end the window with Edouard, Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli all vying for the striker role in Arteta’s lineup.
Admittedly, a number of those players can feature in other positions. Aubameyang has regularly been deployed in a wider role out on the left this term.
But for Nketiah, Edouard’s arrival may perhaps leave him with questions concerning his own future at the Emirates.
Nketiah has made a positive impact since returning from his loan spell at Leeds United. He has scored three goals for the Gunners this term.
And Arteta recently told the club’s official website that Nketiah had been ‘phenomenal’ since his return.
But if Arsenal are going to part with a £30 million fee to sign Edouard, Nketiah may have concerns about how much game-time he will enjoy, particularly if Aubameyang will also stick around.
He may relish the opportunity to battle with the Frenchman if he arrives. And any concerns he may have are surely unlikely to lead to Nketiah asking for a move away from North London.
But perhaps he will need to consider potentially leaving on loan again. He looks to have an incredible amount of potential, but he will be wary of allowing his development to stagnate.
If the reports are correct, Arsenal could have an amazing group of attacking players next season. But Arteta will surely be aware that that may also mean that something has to give.
