Eddie Nketiah has claimed Arsenal manager Unai Emery wanted to keep him for the 2019/20 season, indicating Leeds United were lucky to get him.
The young striker is spending the season on loan at Elland Road after completing his move on transfer deadline day for Championship clubs.
It’s been a bright start for the 20-year-old with the Whites; he’s made five first-team appearances so far and scored three goals.
Nketiah will hope to get more opportunities from Marcelo Bielsa after the international break, which has begun with him scoring two goals for the U21s against Turkey on Friday.
He said (Daily Mail): “The manager wanted me to stay so it’s really confidence-boosting for me that he had me in his plans. But I felt like it was a good step for me to come to Leeds.
“I hope it’s a good year that can leave me in good stead going back to Arsenal to fight for a place.”
Leeds fans were rightfully excited by the capture of Nketiah and his comments would certainly suggest that the club were very lucky get him for the season.
The fact that Emery wanted him as part of his first-team squad at Arsenal really shows how highly his parent club rate him. Nketiah defying his manager and plumping for a loan move would suggest he is really ready to graft.
His clinical start must be difficult for Bielsa to ignore, and Arsenal fans will hope the Argentine tactician will allow their young star the chance to flourish, considering he might have stayed at the Emirates Stadium.
