Report: Eddie Howe has dedicated more time to ‘immense’ Newcastle 22-year-old than any other player

Newcastle are starting to see the fruits of Eddie Howe’s labour in recent weeks with a sharp increase in results giving the Toon renewed hope of Premier League survival.

Last week’s point against West Ham was yet another show of resilience and character from the Magpies. A Joe Willock goal ensured they came away from London with a draw when a few months ago, a defeat would have been more or less guaranteed.

Speaking of Willock, the former Arsenal man has seen his performance levels pick up of late. After being so good during a loan spell last term, Willock had initially struggled this term under the watch of Steve Bruce. However, under Howe, he appears to be getting back to his best form.

And according to The Telegraph, that could be down to Howe himself. Their report today claims that Willock is the player in the Newcastle squad that Howe has spent the most time coaching. It’s claimed that Willock has been encouraged and comforted by Howe and his coaching team. But, at the same time, the ex-Arsenal man has also been shown some ‘tough love’ by Howe.

It appears, then, that the method is working. Willock, at least last week anyway, looked back to being the player Newcastle knew they were buying in the summer.

TBR’s View: Willock Key For Newcastle

Everyone saw the impact and quality Joe Willock brought to the table last season. His goals and overall performance levels were brilliant and proved he can do it.

Of course, differing factors have seen Willock drop off. But that was the case with many under Bruce, and there is a huge difference in this Newcastle squad under Howe’s leadership. Indeed, Rio Ferdinand labelled Willock as ‘immense’ for his performance at West Ham.

A fit and firing Joe Willock is key for the Mags. And if he can keep going as he has done recently, then St James’ Park could be in for some vintage displays.
