Eddie Howe has been quoted by the Evening Times as saying that AFC Bournemouth winger Jordon Ibe has a “long way back” to make it at the Vitality Stadium, amid reports that the ex-Liverpool winger could consider a move to Celtic.
Ibe, 24, has been afforded just four appearances in all competitions this season – two of which have come as Premier League substitute outings. That last outing in England’s top flight came way back in August.
As per the Evening Times, Lennon is an ‘admirer’ of the player and considered moves back in the summer and even in January. He is believed to be rated at a whopping £15million, and earns £40,000 a week (Evening Times).
Asked about Ibe’s future, Howe responded by stating he is a firm believer that the winger has the talent – but thinks something needs to change in Ibe’s life if he is to make it. Howe did admit that it would be a “long way back” for Ibe at Bournemouth.
“I’d be foolish if I sat here and said ‘he’s played his last game’, and then played again,” Howe said. “I never shut the door on anybody until they’ve left the club, I don’t think that’s the way to be, but certainly he’s got a long way back from here.
“I have no doubt about his quality and playing characteristics, but certainly there needs to be a change in Jordon’s life for him to reach the level that he can.”
TBR’s view – Is Ibe worth it, considering the financial outlay?
At his best, Ibe clocked up an enormous 58 appearances for Liverpool in which he had a hand in 11 goals. An England Under-21 international, Ibe has also clocked up 119 appearances in the Premier League.
However, struggling to get into a Bournemouth side that are desperate for a spark is telling. A few years ago, he might have been worth the £15million price tag – but now he is worth much less than that. Celtic should sign him, but on the cheap.
