Eddie Gray says Leeds doing everything they can to sign £40m-rated defender

Eddie Gray has told the Sunday Post that Leeds United are doing everything within their power to convince Brighton to let them sign Ben White on a permanent basis – despite the defender being rated at a whopping £40million.

White, 22, joined Leeds last summer as somewhat of an unknown. He failed to win a single England youth cap and had only played as high as League One level on loan, and just twice at senior level for Brighton.

Nevertheless, Marcelo Bielsa brought White to Elland Road as Pontus Jansson’s replacement. He played every single Championship match as Leeds gained promotion to the Premier League – clocking up 49 in total.

He signed off his spell at Leeds with a stunning volley, but the Whites are doing everything they can to nab the defender permanently. That is according to Gray, who also stated the club are ready to also sign a replacement.

“Listen, there is no question that Ben is very, very good,” Gray said. “The club are doing everything they can to keep him for next season, and I hope they succeed because I would love to see him play for Leeds United in the Premier.

“If they can’t keep Ben White, then they will have the resources available to find a replacement and the team will go on. It is unfair, though, to talk about Ben being the reason for promotion.”

TBR’s view – Leeds must be willing to pay any money

But even that might not be enough. Brighton rate White at a whopping £40million and if Leeds can match that asking price, then a move to Elland Road could be on the cards. But Liverpool are also linked.

Would White choose to leave Brighton on a permanent basis for Leeds – even if Liverpool come knocking? Leeds are doing all they can, but it might not be enough.
