‘Easier for me’: Bruno Fernandes shares what Tottenham’s midfielders did last night which really helped him

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has shared what Tottenham Hotspur’s midfielders did last night which really helped him.

The Portuguese midfielder put in an excellent display in the United midfield and rounded it off with a well-taken goal.

Spurs were underwhelming on the night and Erik Ten Hag’s men created big chances throughout the game.

Fernandes was central to most of United’s positive play last night and he claims that Spurs’ midfield were pushing high up the pitch, which allowed him to find pockets of space.

Fernandes shares what Tottenham’s midfielders did

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, Fernandes said: “Tottenham with their midfielders want to go high and try to recover the ball as high as possible, so it was a little bit easier for me to get the spaces there.”

Spurs did try to push higher up the pitch on occasions last night, with a midfield three of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma.

The 3-5-2 system has allowed Spurs to attempt to press higher when used by Conte in recent weeks.

But the Spurs press often looked disjointed last night and when United played through it, Conte’s men would go back into a low-block.

The extra man in midfield should have given Spurs more solidity in the middle of the park last night. But Fernandes found himself in huge amounts of space on too many occasions.

Conte faces a bit of a dilemma in terms of his midfield at the moment. Spurs have often been overrun while playing with the 3-4-3 system this season, but they looked no better in the 3-5-2 set-up last night.

The Italian will be hoping his side can move on quickly from another disappointing display away from home against a top six side.

Spurs face an in-form Newcastle team this weekend and will need to be at their best if they are to get back to winning ways.
