‘Eager to impress’: Tottenham man wants to become a ‘big success’ in Premier League, but he could leave next summer - Alasdair Gold

Tottenham Hotspur defender Clement Lenglet wants to become a ‘big success’ in the Premier League, according to journalist Alasdair Gold.

Gold spoke about Lenglet’s situation at Spurs in his latest Q&A on Football.London

Lenglet made the switch to Tottenham this summer after joining on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

The French defender has got off to a decent start to his Spurs career and has slotted into Conte’s system well.

And Gold says the 27-year-old wants to make a big impact in the Premier League, despite the possibility he could only be at Spurs for just one season.

Lenglet wants to become a ‘big success’ for Spurs

Gold was asked if Conte sees Lenglet as a long-term solution for the left-sided centre-back role in his side.

“Conte seems to like him,” Gold responded in the Q&A

“Spurs definitely wanted Gvardiol or Bastoni last summer but they were both big money signings and unavailable for varying reasons and that’s why they went for the experienced Lenglet and this loan.

“It essentially either fixes the problem for a season with competition for Davies and they try again for Bastoni next summer, or Lenglet makes the role his own.

“Having spoken to the Frenchman out in Israel, he’s a clever chap, very grounded and eager to impress and it’s no surprise he’s taken on Conte’s ideas quickly.

“I asked Lenglet out there about what comes next, as there’s no option to buy him, and he said the coming months will decide what happens. He wants to be a big success in the Premier League and then it’s down to Spurs and Barcelona to speak about the future.

“If he shines, it becomes a no brainer to work out a deal with Barcelona who likely won’t want to keep him anyway. If he doesn’t become a success then the loan simply ends. It’s pretty cut and dried for a Tottenham situation.”

For the time being, Lenglet seems to be a short-term option for Conte due to not being able to secure other targets.

But that could change quickly and the France international has the remainder of the season to convince Tottenham to sign him on a permanent basis.

Lenglet has certainly made a decent start and has added some much-needed ball-playing abilities to Spurs’ backline.
