'Dynamite': Journalist says Aston Villa player is manager's 'favourite'; he's definitely going to the World Cup

A number of Aston Villa’s players will already have one eye on November’s World Cup.

Speaking to Off The Ball, Tim Vickery has spoken about Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho’s chances.

Coutinho hasn’t been in the best of form this season, making six league appearances and failing to register a goal or assist.

The Brazilian has failed to play 90 minutes once this season, switching between playing on the left-wing and as a ten.

Jamie Carragher has warned that if Coutinho’s form doesn’t improve, he’s at risk of wasting Villa’s resources.

Despite all this, Coutinho is almost certainly going to the World Cup in Qatar.

He’s been left out of Tite’s squad for Brazil’s upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia.

However, the 30-year-old is an ‘absolute favourite’ of Brazil’s coach and Vickery is confident Coutinho will be on the plane.

Coutinho still going to the World Cup

Despite not being in Tite’s current squad, there aren’t many natural replacements for Coutinho in the cohort he’s called on.

West Ham’s new signing Lucas Paqueta can play as an attacking playmaker, but tends to sit slightly deeper for Brazil.

Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes could also fill that role, but is more of a shuttling player than someone who will unlock defences.

For this reason, Coutinho is still likely to go to the World Cup.

However, this omission will act as a warning to Villa’s number 23.

“Philippe Coutinho is an absolute favourite of Brazil’s coach Tite.” Vickery said.

“Who brought him back when he was really still in the doldrums at Barcelona moving to Aston Villa.

“And now he’s been left out of the squad.

“Does that mean he’s not going to the World Cup? I doubt it.

“I should think it’s a little bit of dynamite being placed, just to try and whip him out of a disappointing start to the season.”
