Dylan Stephenson called up to Newcastle senior side after blistering start
Steve Bruce has called Dylan Stephenson up to the senior squad (Chronicle Live).
Having failed to get a win under their belts in four Premier League games, Bruce is looking for inspiration.
Callum Wilson’s injury certainly hasn’t helped, but now Bruce has done something about it.
Whilst Wilson is out it appears that the young Stephenson could come in and try to make an impact.
The 18-year-old has been in prolific form this season.
Stephenson has bagged five goals in four games so far for the U23s (Transfermarkt).
Those numbers aren’t guaranteed to translate to senior football, but at least he’s finding the net.
The latest on Wilson’s injury is that he could be out until after the October international break (The Athletic).
If that proves to be the case then Stephenson will be needed.
The other forward options available to Bruce are Joelinton and Dwight Gayle.
However, the pair managed just five Premier League goals between them last season (WhoScored).
That simply isn’t enough, and it’s clear why Stephenson has been drafted in.
When Wilson is fit he works well in tandem with Allan Saint-Maximin, so it will be interesting to see if Stephenson can do.
The chances are that he won’t be thrown n at the deep end and will be used off the bench to start with.
If the goals simply dry up then chancing the youngster could be the way forward.
All the Magpies have to do is get through to the October internationals.
Hopefully after that break Wilson will return and can fire his side up the league table.
As things stand, Bruce’s Newcastle are 19th and winless and something has to change.
Maybe that change can be Stephenson, who will be keen to impress after his exploits at youth level.
