Sunderland midfielder Dylan McGeouch has admitted he may have to consider leaving the club this summer.

Sunderland fought off plenty of interest to sign the player on a free transfer last summer. The Scottish midfielder had just forced his way into the national team picture and had teams from Scotland and England scrambling for his signature.

But in the end, Jack Ross convinced him to join Sunderland’s League One promotion battle.

However, he has struggled for consistency at Sunderland and told the Scottish Sun this week that he might have to say goodbye to Wearside.

“I have a big decision to make. It’s disappointing I haven’t played as much as I’d have liked.

“I’m fit and feel good and I felt I could bring something to the team on Sunday.

“I expressed that to the manager, but he can only pick 18 players.

“I’ll see where my future is at and take it from there. It’s been a stop-start campaign, but I’ve been available for the majority of games. I’ve only played a handful.”

It would be a big decision from the player. He told the Daily Record in January that Sunderland ‘ticked all the boxes’ and of how working with Ross was a big reason behind the move.

But things have simply turned sour.

Sunderland expected to sell Lee Cattermole last summer but the club stalwart ended up sticking around. The signatures of Max Power and, later, Grant Leadbitter also had McGeouch fighting an uphill battle for regular football.

Niggling injuries also did not help the player who, in short spurts, showed what he is capable of for Sunderland.

It will certainly be interesting to see if he does stick around at Sunderland over the summer.
