Dylan Duncan trained with Southgate’s England in 2016 but Tottenham Hotspur have now released the midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur have announced their released and retained list for this summer with the likes of Michel Vorm and Connor Ogilvie both being shown the exit door.

Another name on the list which might have caught the eye is that of Dylan Duncan. The 20-year-old has been allowed to leave the club and will be hunting for a new club this summer.

The former Southend United trainee played 19 times for the under-23s this season but it is clear he has no long-term future in the Tottenham first-team.

Which is something of a surprise, considering he was training with the senior England team in November 2016.

Gareth Southgate was still in temporary charge of the England team at the time following Sam Allardyce’s dismissal.

England were short of players for a training session ahead of a friendly with Spain. A report from The Telegraph suggested that FA director of elite development Dan Ashworth asked Tottenham under-21 boss Ugo Ehiogu to nominate a player to join up with the senior side.

Ehiogu, who sadly passed away in April 2017, selected the teenage Duncan to fill the role.

Unfortunately, Duncan never quite progressed at the level many at Tottenham might have hoped. The likes of Oliver Skipp and Tashan Oakley-Boothe pushed ahead of him in the pecking order and Duncan will now be looking for a new challenge.

Tottenham Hotspur fans will undoubtedly wish the 20-year-old midfielder all the best in the future. If he can harness his talent, a flying career elsewhere should follow.
